How Casino Craps Works

When you log on to your online casino of choice and navigate to the Table Games section to play some craps, you’ll see a game board. This board is how you place your wagers - you move chips to various areas on the board that represent specific outcomes you are wagering on. In this respect, online craps is far simpler than craps at a physical casino, as you are the only player involved in it when you play online. This makes the process of getting started much easier.

When starting the game, you can choose to bet the Pass Line or the Don’t Pass Line. These bets affect your percentages. Let’s start with betting the Pass Line.

Betting The Pass Line

A game of online craps begins with what is known as the Come-Out roll. This is the first roll that you make. There are several categories of possible outcomes from the Come-Out roll.

  • 7 or 11: Instant win (at even money)
  • 2, 3 or 12: Instant loss
  • 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10: Point is established

While it may seem like the casino has an edge in this phase, because there are three combinations that result in an instant loss, and two that result in an instant win, it’s important to remember that you’re rolling two six sided die, and therefore each result does not have an equal chance of happening. There are a total of four potential combinations that can result in a 2,3 or 12, which means you have an 11.11 percent chance of losing immediately. There are a total of eight combinations that can result in 7 or 11, which means you have a 22.2% chance of winning immediately. Below, you can see a chart of the dice values, the potential combinations that can yield that value, and the percentage chance of each of those combinations when you roll a pair of six sided die.

Dice Value Potential Combinations % Chance

  • 2/1 2.78%
  • 3/2 5.56%
  • 4/3 8.33%
  • 5/4 11.11%
  • 6/5 13.89%
  • 7/6 16.67%
  • 8/5 13.89%
  • 9/4 11.11%
  • 10/3 8.33%
  • 11/2 5.56%
  • 12/1 2.78%

Together, this means there is a 33.33% chance of the game ending on the come-out roll - ⅔
of the time in your favor, and ⅓ of the time in favor of the casino. However, the most likely outcome is that you establish a point.

Once the point is established, you have to roll that dice value one more time before you roll a seven. If you roll a seven before rolling that dice value, you lose the game. This is where the casino’s edge comes from - a seven is the most likely combination of two six sided die, so when the point is established, the casino is likely to come out ahead.

Betting The Don’t Pass Line

The Don’t Pass Line is the opposite of the Pass Line, and the combinations that it can yield on the come-out roll are as follows.

  • 7 or 11: Instant loss
  • 2, 3: Instant win (at even money)
  • 12: Push
  • 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10: Point is established

This means that there is less of an edge for the player on the come-out roll. Other than that, the bets are the same once the point is established.

Odds Bets

At some online casinos, craps players can make odds bets when they have established a point. These bets are a way of doubling down on certain numbers that you may or may not roll, and increasing potential profit if you manage to win before sevening out. At Bovada, for example, when you play online craps, you can make the following odds bets when your point has been established. They are broken down by the bets available when making Pass and Don’t Pass bets.

Pass Line

  • 4, 10: 2/1
  • 5, 9: 3/2
  • 6, 8: 6/5

Don’t Pass Line

  • 4, 10: 1/2
  • 5, 9: 2/3
  • 6, 8: 5/6

Note that the Don’t Pass line has higher payouts for odds bets. This is because the Pass Line is more advantageous on the come-out roll, and the casino is looking to make the potential payouts more even.
